Preventative Computer Forensics

A recent study by the University of California showed that 87% of our written communications are now in e-mail form. In addition  almost all of our documents are in electronic format such as MS Word or Excel.  Customer lists, vendor lists, production plans, business plans are almost always stored electronically.   This means that with the click of a mouse, your most important intellectual assets can be sent to 160 countries around the world in seconds.  Can you honestly say that you know that nobody in your organization would compromise your security when looking for another job? Is everyone really happy here ?

Companies often don't want to tackle these sensitive issues.  Many shrug this off as an IT problem when really it is a corporate wide issue.  Some use the excuse "the CEO knows everyone by name" or "we place trust in our employees". Others will even boldly state "we compensate our staff so well that this could never happen".  Unfortunately these are all things that CyberControls has heard from customers who are in the throws of untangling the legal malaise after a major information breach has occurred.  Information security breaches cost millions of  dollars per year and that excludes the fact that once a breach has occurred it is nearly impossible to calculate the competitive damage to your organization.

Using forensics in a proactive way, goes far beyond simply having a network specialist look at active files on a hard drive or even monitoring e-mail traffic. In fact, less than 9% of companies even monitor internal e-mails.  Forensic examiners can be retained to review deleted files on network or individual drives, chat session logs, web based e-mail sessions, and PDA's. CyberControls combines forensic technology and experienced examiners to identify questionable activities taking place in your information infrastructure. With the results of these forensic examinations on-going problems or vulnerabilities can be eliminated.

Applications where forensic investigations have been utilized:

1. Identification of sensitive documents that have been electronically removed from the company.

2. Recovery of deleted files that may represent an exposure to the organization.

3. Recovery of e-mail files to determine where inappropriate activity is, or may have been occurring.

4. Identification and removal of inappropriate materials that may reside on network drives.

5. Location of sensitive documents or intellectual property that may exist in unauthorized locations.

6. Examination of web based e-mails or chat room conversation (where examination is permitted by law).
